Exploring the Gorges of the Kimberley

Windjana Gorges

Discover the majestic Windjana Gorge, a stunning natural wonder stretching 3.5 km and sculpted through the Napier Range by the Lennard River. This remarkable gorge, with its towering walls reaching 30 to 100 metres in height and spanning over 100 metres in width, is a testament to nature’s artistry. The Napier Range, part of an ancient barrier reef system, links Windjana Gorge with other geological marvels like Tunnel Creek and Geikie Gorge. This area, now a breathtaking landscape, was once submerged under the ocean over 300 million years ago during the Devonian period, offering a unique perspective on the Earth’s climatic evolution and the intriguing topic of global warming. Visitors should note that the gorge is inaccessible during the wet season, as the Lennard River transforms into a powerful torrent. Additionally, the gorge is home to an abundant population of freshwater crocodiles, adding to the allure and wild beauty of this must-visit destination.

Lennard Gorge

Embark on a journey to the hidden gem of the Kimberley region, Lennard Gorge, renowned for its serene beauty and seclusion. The adventure begins with an 8 km journey along a 4WD-only track, leading you to a dedicated parking area. From here, prepare for an exhilarating hike. The trail, unmarked and offering a touch of wilderness, promises an exciting challenge. Veer to the right, and you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view from a ledge that overlooks the gorge and its cascading falls. Alternatively, take the left path to discover the top of the falls, where you can indulge in a refreshing swim in the tranquil waters. For the complete Lennard Gorge experience, I highly recommend exploring both paths to fully embrace the beauty and adventure this hidden oasis offers.

Bell Gorge

Experience the allure of Bell Gorge, a renowned highlight of the Kimberley region and a favorite among all who visit. This stunning gorge is easily accessible via a short, scenic walk along Bell Creek from the car park, guiding you into the heart of this natural paradise. Here, you’ll witness a spectacular waterfall gracefully descending between V-shaped cliffs into a deep, inviting pool, perfect for a rejuvenating swim. Surrounding the pool, large rock platforms offer an idyllic setting for a picnic lunch, a relaxing rest post-swim, or a peaceful spot to recharge before you continue your exploration. Bell Gorge is not just a destination; it’s an experience that captivates the senses and leaves lasting memories.

Adcock Gorge

Discover the tranquil beauty of Adcock Gorge, nestled just 5 km from the Gibb River Road and accessed via a picturesque 4WD track that winds through stunning natural scenery. Embark on a brief, enchanting walk that takes you past a serene billabong, adorned with water lilies, leading to a secluded freshwater pool. Encircled by lush grass and delicate ferns, this hidden oasis offers a peaceful retreat, usually undisturbed by crowds. Adcock Gorge is a slice of paradise, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the tranquility and splendor of the Kimberley’s unique landscapes.

Galvans Gorge

Conveniently reachable, simply park your vehicle in the designated car park along the main road and enjoy a leisurely one-kilometre stroll inwards. Your walk will be rewarded with the sight of a delightful pool, inviting you to unwind. Immerse yourself under the cascading waterfall for a natural shoulder massage, experience the thrill of a rope swing dive for a playful splash, or indulge in a few laps of tranquil swimming. The return walk is just as pleasant, offering a chance to reflect on your refreshing experience. Due to its accessibility, this spot is a favored choice for tour operators and can occasionally be bustling with fellow nature enthusiasts.

Manning Gorge

Manning Gorge is a breathtaking spectacle, especially during the wet season when rains transform the entire expanse of the gorge into a magnificent cascade. As the waters gradually recede, they give way to a series of distinct waterfalls, each elegantly tumbling over terraced rock formations before gracefully descending into the pool below. This gorge is an ideal spot to pause for a few days, offering a serene break from your journey. It’s the perfect place to unwind, soak in the natural beauty, and rejuvenate before continuing your drive.

Barnett River Gorges

Experience the unique charm of the only complimentary bush camp site along the Gibb River Road, a hidden gem in its own right. The journey to this site is an adventure, with a track that may be quite rugged at times, leading to a rustic and authentic camping experience. While the gorges here might not be the most renowned in the Kimberley, the bush camping spots are truly picturesque. Scattered in individual clearings along the Barnett River, these sites offer a serene and intimate connection with nature. To reach the Barnett River Gorges, follow the track and stay to the right until you arrive at the Barnett River. From there, it’s advisable to continue on foot to fully enjoy the tranquility and beauty of this special location.

The Mitchell Falls and the Mitchell Plateau

Mitchell Falls, a renowned Kimberley icon, is often captured in photographs, yet no image can fully encapsulate its true magnificence. Beyond the allure of the famous falls lies a realm of equally remarkable sights. Little Mertens Falls, contrary to its name, is a grand spectacle, complete with natural spa pools above and a hidden cave beneath that are nothing short of enchanting. Additionally, the area boasts an impressive open-air gallery showcasing the world-famous Bradshaw rock art.

Embark on an unforgettable bushwalk, a journey that weaves through crystal-clear streams shaded by pandanus palms, serene pools adorned with water lilies, and awe-inspiring cliffs and waterfalls. This trek, ranging from 4 to 6 hours for a round trip, traverses rugged terrain peppered with numerous side paths that can extend your adventure. Be sure to carry ample water to stay hydrated throughout this extraordinary exploration.
